BREAKING GROUND AT CAMP OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD!
Last October at the HHMI fundraising event funds were raised to build a new required commercial kitchen at Camp of the Good Shepherd. On February 27 th we broke ground! As soon as the snow had melted away the crew, lead by Camp Director Iulian Cindulet, used picks to break through the hard frozen ground. |

Additional drain lines were laid to meet code and accommodate the extra capacity the new kitchen will give Camp of the Good Shepherd.

Below : With the foundation dug by hand, the wooden forms are put into place along with the required rebar for structural support and integrity. The next step will be to pour the concrete into the forms and the floor of the foundation. When the Chapel Hill Presbyterian volunteer team arrives on April 13 th all should be ready to start building the walls in the traditional Romanian cement block and mortar style. The bottom right photo was taken March 26h, showing the fantastic progress made in one month! When I asked Iulian his thoughts on the past month, the first sentiments he expressed were as follows: “I just keep thinking of the American men that came and taught me so much…Rod, Leonard, Tom, Dan, Nathan, Brad…everything from holding the hammer correctly to concrete curing, to setting forms, to laying pipe and tile, to roofing. And now 8 years later I am fully responsible and leading this project and teaching our crew and we are on schedule! It's so exciting I hate even taking a day off!” Look for continued progress and updates on our website at the Camp Progress link. |
